Lecture 4

Jesus calms the storm

>>> Read Mark 4:35-41. <<<

Jesus constantly demonstrated His authority by doing things that were completely beyond human ability. In this example, Jesus fell asleep on a mat while the disciples were in a boat on the Sea of Galilee. A great storm came and the disciples panicked. In desperation, they woke Jesus up and said, "Teacher, don't you care that we are perishing?" He got up and calmly rebuked the wind and the sea. The storm has stopped. Then he turned to the disciples and rebuked them for their lack of faith. Although they had seen Jesus perform many miracles, they were always amazed at each new miracle. They said, "Who is it that the wind and the sea obey him?"

Pay attention - what is the quality of our sleep?Given what the disciples saw in Jesus, their skepticism about Jesus' ability to calm the storm was astonishing. They saw him heal countless people, cast out demons, and excel at every task. They are suddenly in despair because of a storm at sea. They clearly didn't believe Jesus could solve the problem because they were surprised when he did. How could they be so slow, so distrustful? Whats with us? Don't we believe that Jesus will solve any situation if we believe and do His will? Don't we see in the Bible how Jesus solves all problems? How do we react when new crises arise in our lives - do we turn to Jesus with trust or do we spread our hands in despair? How well do we sleep?

Jesus casts out a group of demons

>>> Read Mark 5:1-20. <<<

When Jesus got out of the boat, a wild man came out to meet Him. This man is inhabited by demons, beyond human power, living in the grave as a barbarian. All the demons in this man were afraid of Jesus. They begged him not to send them off the ground (down to the abyss, Luke 8:31). Instead, they want access to nearby pig herds. Apparently, if demons were cast into the afterlife without permission, they would have to return to hell. No doubt, if necessary, it would be better to live in a pig than to be sent back to that awful place. Unexpectedly, Jesus agreed to the demon's request. They left the man and entered the herd of pigs. Mad at the presence of the demon within them, the herd ran and jumped off the cliffs. The pig drowned, and the demon probably had to return to the abyss. They may have thought they were smarter than Jesus when Jesus let them into the fold, but the truth is Jesus was smarter than them! In the end, they had to go back to the Abyss - they just used the slide to get there.

At the same time, the pig herders entered the city and told the people of the city what Jesus had done. What an opportunity for this small town to have Jesus! Although they saw no opportunity, they asked Jesus to leave. The healed man wanted to follow Jesus, but Jesus told him to go home and preach.

Note - was asked to leave!At first it seemed incredible that the townspeople did not want Jesus to stay. But consider what they just lost: 2,000 pigs. Some have them, others intend to make money by slaughtering, processing and selling them. This hurt the city's economy. Apparently, they loved material possessions more than Jesus. Thus they lose the highest privilege. They asked him to leave. Have we ever invited the Lord out of our lives because we love material things more than Him?

Beware - Jesus' Surprising Instruction:When the healed man wanted to follow him, Jesus gave him strange instructions. He does not allow the man to be with him, but asks him to come back and tell him about his recovery in the city. There are two surprising things about this commandment: 1) Jesus wouldn't let this man follow him. Putting myself in the devil's shoes, I understand why he wanted to be with the man who healed him; but Jesus said no. Isn't it wonderful to be with Jesus? secure. But Jesus preferred this man to witness his work in the city. Sometimes God may not want us to be in a safe and comfortable environment but to serve the lost. 2) Jesus usually forbade people to talk about his healing (see Mark 1:40-45). Why has it suddenly changed here? Remember where Jesus is. It is located on the eastern side of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus does not want an audience in the area of Capernaum west of the sea, but he is not in danger of becoming too popular in this wicked city. The people of this place need someone to report this miracle.

*4* What did you try to do to subdue the demon (v4)? a) psychology, b) chains and chains, c) shock therapy, d) drugs. Answer:______.

*5* What are the names of the demons (verse 9)? answer: ______.

*7* What happened to the pigs when the demon entered them? Answer: They ran down a cliff and drowned in ______.

*8* What did the people ask Jesus for? Answer: They asked Jesus to ______.

*9* What did Jesus tell the demon-possessed man to do after healing him? a) don't tell anyone what happened b) lie about what happened c) tell everyone what happened d) send yourself to a mental hospital. answer: ______.

Jesus heals a bleeding woman

>>> Read Mark 5:21-34. <<<

A synagogue official named Jairus asked Jesus to come and heal his dying daughter. As Jesus was returning home, one desperate woman in the crowd touched the Lord. She has been bleeding for 12 years, has been to many doctors, has spent all her money, but her condition is getting worse. She thought she could be healed just by touching Jesus. Indeed, when she touched Jesus' cloak, she felt that the bleeding immediately stopped and all was well. Suddenly Jesus asked who had touched him. The disciples thought it was a strange question because a large crowd was coming to Jesus. Many people "touched" Him. But women know what Jesus means. Terrified, she approached and confessed. Jesus assured her that her faith had saved her.

Note - why did Jesus shame her?Apparently the bleeding woman wanted to avoid exposure. Instead of making her presence known, she silently touched Jesus' robe and was healed. Then Jesus asked who had touched him and embarrassed her. She trembled as she admitted what she had done. Why would you pay attention to this shy lady? Maybe for two reasons: 1) If it wasn't, the woman would believe she was healed by some magic associated with Jesus' robe. He wanted her to know that he had healed her on purpose. Many touched His garments, but were not healed; she was healed by the will of the Lord. 2) Her conscience may torment her later if Jesus makes her think she "stole" the healing and walks away. He publicly identified her, managed to console her, reassure her, and reassure her.

*10* How long has this woman had bleeding problems? Answer: ______ years.

*11* How have you struggled to recover before? Answer: She spent all her money on ______.

*12* When did the blood clot heal? a) has not recovered; b) when she believed in Jesus; c) when she asked him to heal; d) when she touched Jesus' robe. answer: ______.

*13* How did the rest of the crowd discover Jesus' miracles? Answer: He asked who had it ______, and the woman admitted.

Jesus heals Jairus' daughter

>>> Read Mark 5:35-43. <<<

During the delay caused by the woman's healing, people came to tell Jairus to stop bothering Jesus about the death of his daughter. Jesus told them to believe and go home. There, the mourners laughed when Jesus told them that the girl was "asleep." He does not deny that she is dead, but confirms that he will bring her back to life soon, so her death is more like a deep sleep. He took only three students and the girl's parents, entered her room and woke her up. She made. The witnesses were amazed.

Notice the theme running through this passage from Mark: Jesus can do what no one else can. First the storm. The disciples were desperate, but Jesus reassured them with one word. Then the demons. Despite many attempts, no one was able to bind or subdue him. With one word, Jesus cast out the demons and people returned to normal. Then a woman. Despite all the money she spent, the surgeons managed to cure her. One-touch healing. Finally Jairus' daughter. When a person dies, all attempts to cure the disease cease, because everyone knows that the dead cannot be resurrected. Jesus did it. In this section of the Gospel of Mark, Jesus steps in and overcomes human impossibility four times.

*14* Why do people suggest Jairus stop bothering Jesus? Answer: Because this girl has ______.

*15* Who was in the room when Jesus resurrected his daughter (verses 37,40)? a) Jesus b) a girl c) the girl's parents d) Peter, James and John e) all of the above but none of the others. answer: ______.

*16* What in the Bible account convinces us that the girl really did come back to life? Answer: ______ gets up.

(Questions to ponder: Given the nature and purpose of these miracles, who on earth today could do such a thing? What can we learn from them?)

rejected in Nazareth

>>> Read Mark 6:1-6. <<<

Jesus returned to his hometown of Nazareth. Despite convincing evidence that he was the Son of God, his own citizens rejected him. They knew his family and background and refused to believe that people they considered their peers could be better than themselves. Jesus healed very few people because people did not have enough faith to come to Him with their illness. The Nazarenes missed a great opportunity to have the Lord with them.

(Video) JESUS, (English), Jesus brings Jairus' Dead Daughter Back to Life

Note - great deal:It is sad when people miss out on a wonderful opportunity to be blessed by Jesus. In the land of the Gadarenes, they simply ask Jesus to go away (5:1-20). Here in Nazareth, they refuse to believe and do not even bring the sick to be healed by Jesus. As a result, others missed the opportunity, such as Jairus and the bleeding woman. Whats with us? Do we take the opportunity to meet Jesus and receive His blessings?

*17* What was Jesus doing before starting his ministry (v. 3)? Answer: He was ______.

(Thinking question: What does this tell you about Maria?)

*18* Which members of Jesus' family did the Nazarenes know (v. 3)? a) his mother Maria, b) his brothers, c) his sisters, d) all of the above. answer: ______.

*19* How did the people of Jesus' hometown (Nazareth) react to him? a) rejected him, b) believed him, c) made him a hero, d) all of the above. answer: ______.
